Allen & Vangie, September 8, 1987
Allen has the physical attributes of Eduardo Isberto. He was timid as a toddler but was brilliant at games he invented. He was able to simulate the popular Tour of Luzon biking race popular in the 70's. By having numbered sofdrink caps for his bikers, he individually maneuvered around 30 of these from the house gate to the backyard among the banana plants, around the "kamalig" or bodega, the balimbing and lanzones trees - all the way to the other side of the compound - constantly pausing briefly along the way to arrange the numbered "bikers" according to their ranks/standing thru updates of the race on the radio. He did this while squat-walking all throughout the "race". He also had his favorite basketball teams in tournaments on a small board also using numbered softdrink crowns for his players. He would yell, scream and shout imitating the noise of the crowd in a coliseum while skillfully tumbling, dipping and passing the ball (he used a prized spherical pebble) tucked underneath these "tansans". He liked to earn money of his own so he went around town selling ice buko stocked in heavy wooden boxes slung on his shoulder. He also earned extra cash for his baon by shoe-shining for Papa.
In September 1987, Allen married an officemate, Evangeline Rodriguez of Balagtas, Bulacan. They eventually settled in Kalibo to be with our ailing Auntie Elen, who raised us when both our parents passed away. Vangie can be proficient in anything that interests her. She can do the traditional tocino and tapa or longganisa but with certain indistinguishable twists on the method that she cooked them. Among my favorites are her kare-kare, pininyahang manok, liempo, sinigang, adobong baboy/manok. Her specialty spare ribs is to-die-for. She is affiliated with the Justice's Office in Kalibo working on classified court cases.
Their firstborn, Emmanuel Jason (Eman), was a lovable toddler. He was able to talk intelligibly at one and a half years. He has the resemblance of his Lolo Edward and can easily charm you to get what he wanted. His gentle manners had an appealing effect to those around him.
Thaddeus (Thad) was a brave and inquisitive kid. Even an IV medication did not stop him from going around the hospital corridors scrutinizing rooms and gadgets along the way while Vangie tried hard to prevent him from dislodging the needle still entrenched on his skin. At two years old, he learned the alphabets and was able to write simple words by observing and imitating his Kuya when doing his homework. This early familiarity with the alphabets can also be attributed to the hours he spent alongside Vangie during tutorial sessions with Eman.
