SHILTIGHEIM | June 7-9, 2008
The group arrived in Shiltigheim at 12 noon and was welcomed at the Hotel de Ville (municipal hall) with a serenade by Petit Choeur, our host choir led by Antoine Genter, a friend from the 2005 tour. Pretzels, orange juice, wines and beer were also served.
Marlon and I were hosted by Gregory Mathias in Haguenau, a 30-minute drive from our base at the Salle in Shiltigheim. A concert with Petit Choeur was held at the Église Saint-Étienne in Marmoutier.
The concert at Église Saint-Étienne, Marmoutier (Bas-Rhin) was full to overflowing. This magnificent church is located near Kochersberg on a site valued for its strategic location ever since the Roman era in the 6th century. In the 7th century, under Abbot Maur’s impetus, it was replaced by a large Benedictine abbey. The city adopted his name and it became known as Maursmunster. The abbey acquired a large territory and became an influential spiritual center until the Revolution.
The interior is renowned for its Baroque altars in the transept, the Sacred-Heart stained glass window by Danegger (1767) and the exceptional Louis-XV stalls and panelling in the chancel (1770).
